Emotional Health Education

Emotional health is determined by how we manage our thoughts and feelings in relation to our experiences such as anger, fear, joy, or sadness. Emotional health management refers to connecting the head (thoughts) and heart (feelings). Often our emotions override our thoughts. This weak connection can cause stress, frustration, and disappointment for us in daily life. Improving emotional health involves strengthening these connections and helps create more of what we want in life.

Emotional Health Management

Our emotions, not our thoughts, motivate us to do things. When the emotions and thoughts agree – when they are connected – we do what we say we will do. Guess what happens when we think we want to do something yet emotionally we are not sure? We hit a road block.

An example would be saying you want to be in a relationship, thinking you deserve a great partner but deep down inside feeling like no one will truly love you. You remember all the disappointments of the past and maybe how you felt or perceived you weren’t good enough. So, no matter how hard you try you can’t seem to find that one special relationship. It never seems to work out. In truth, it’s because you won’t let it.

The emotional brain is programmed at an early age – generationally and through events and experiences that may have been highly emotional at the time. During those moments, we became attached to perceptions or beliefs that are not always accurate. Those perceptions or beliefs often keep us stuck in unhappy places. To develop emotionally healthy lives we must become emotionally aware of our programming, our perceptions of what we believe about ourselves or situations or others, and keep what works and reprogram what does not.

Why Improve Your Emotional Health?

Your emotional health effects how you approach life. Emotional awareness and being emotionally connected help you in the following ways:

  • Recognize who you are; what you like, what you don’t like, and what you need.
  • Understand and empathize with others
  • Communicate clearly and effectively
  • Make wise decisions based on things that are most important to you
  • Get motivated and take action to meet goals
  • Build strong, healthy and rewarding relationships

Emotional health management involves learning how to deal with the emotional brain, to calm it down, and to meet its needs. This is the key to getting what we want in life.
